Brace care tips to ensure you get the most from your aligners

If you have braces or aligners in your mouth it is vitally important that you have good mouth hygiene, or you will increase the likelihood you’ll suffer from tooth decay. Below are some brace care tips to help you get the most from your braces or aligners and to make sure they do the job they should.

Brace care tips for metal or ceramic braces

It can depend on what problem you have as to whether you need metal or ceramic braces, or if Invisalign would be suitable. First of all, let’s look at the brace care tips for the more traditional types of braces.

  • Food is likely to get stuck in between your teeth and braces. It is advisable to clean your teeth after eating, and it should be at least twice a day. If you cannot clean them, wash your mouth with water as this will help.
  • Use a soft compact toothbrush at a 45-degree angle against your gums. Gently brush along the line where your teeth and gums meet and then each tooth in a small circular motion.
  • If you brush in a set pattern you are less likely to miss a tooth.
  • Gently brush the braces, spreading the bristles between the gaps between the wires and your teeth.
  • If your braces have any removeable parts be sure to take them out and clean them. You can do this by brushing them with toothpaste and rinsing them in plain water before putting them back in.
  • Your can still floss your teeth with braces, although a special tool may be needed. Your dentist will be able to advise you on this and show you how to use it.
  • Avoid drinks and foods that stain your teeth. This is because if your teeth become stained, when the braces are removed the tooth surface below them could be a lighter colour.
  • There are some foods that are best avoided to help keep your braces in good order. Chewy foods such as bagels and marshmallows, crunchy foods such as popcorn and crisps, sticky treats such as toffee and caramel, sugary cakes and biscuits, fizzy soda drinks, hard sweets, nuts, and crusty bread are all foods that should be left out of your diet. Things such as apples and carrots are better if they are cut up before you eat them.
  • You may suffer some discomfort when your braces are first fitted, but if this continues for more than a few days, you should revisit your dentist.

These brace care tips are important to follow if you do not want your braces to cause other damage to your teeth.

Tips for getting the most from Invisalign

Invisalign is a tooth straightening treatment that is becoming more popular all the time. This is because it is less apparent when in use, which for people whose appearance matters, such as actors and models, is very important. Invisalign can be used to make your teeth look better without some of the problems associated with traditional braces, as long as you use them as directed. These few brace care tips for Invisalign will help:

  • It seems that the biggest problem that new Invisalign users have is not wearing them for long enough each day. Your goal should be to get to as close to 22 hours as you can, or you may hinder the progress of your treatment.
  • Make sure you change them when you should. Each new set will be slightly different and may create a small amount of discomfort for a day or two. You can help to relieve this by sucking on an ice cube when they are out, as this will numb your gums. If your gums are sore, avoid chewy, crunchy or crispy foods. Make the change to your new aligner early in the day so if there is any discomfort the worst of it is over with before you go to sleep.
  • As with any type of tooth straightening, good oral hygiene is essential. Clean your teeth and aligners at least two times every day, not forgetting to floss your teeth as well.
  • Remember, each set of aligners is made specifically for you and they should never be used by anyone else.

Other advantages of Invisalign

As well as needing fewer brace care tips, Invisalign clear braces are practically invisible to anyone except the wearer. But you need to use them properly or they will not be as effective as they should be, and your dentist will know.

They can tell if you have not been wearing them as you should, just as they will be able to tell if you have been eating while wearing them or having hot drinks. If you don’t want to have a mouth full of metal or ceramic to put your teeth in order, you need to follow the instructions for your aligners exactly.

Of course, as with everything in life there are some disadvantages too. For instance, lipstick should not be worn with clear braces as it will stick to the aligners and may stain them. You can wear clear lip gloss or lip balm, but they may leave a sticky residue on the aligner.
